Born in the small town of Dusseldorf, Germany, in 1880 Joseph Pilates achieved success as a boxer, gymnast, skier a diver and a circus performer. His quest for ultimate physical conditioning led to what is now popularly known as Pilates. After WWI he immigrated to New York in 1925. Upon arrival to New York he opened a gym and called his work contrology. His clientele included many New York actors, dancers and boxers with jobs that demanded elite body conditioning. Joe was a genius and 50 years ahead of his time. His brilliant approach to fitness includes over 500 exercises on equipment he designed and built to teach his method. He died in October 1967 at the age of 87.
“A few well-designed movements, properly performed in a balanced sequence, are worth hours of doing sloppy calisthenics or forced contortion.” Joseph Pilates
